Over the past fifty years, Greater Sochi has significantly expanded its territory, uniting several neighboring districts. In 2020, the Federal Territory "Sirius" was created - a special administrative unit with its own public authorities, possessing a high degree of autonomy. Before receiving a special status, this district was known as an educational center, which was created in 2015 for talented children and young people. Its name "Sirius" was proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. After all, Sirius is the brightest star, and the main mission of the center is to educate the brightest and most promising representatives of the younger generation, whose ideas can contribute to the future development of the country and change the world for the better. On January 28, 2019, within the framework of the III All-Russian Conference "Path to Success: Strategies for Supporting Gifted Children and Youth", an association of partner schools of "Sirius" was created. Since 2021, "Sirius" has had its own management system and budget. Over the past three years, a new community has emerged here due to the implementation of large-scale projects aimed at further development, which is being built on the infrastructure inherited from the 2014 Olympics, which allows for the efficient use of resources to implement new projects and attract investment.
The first center for the development of science and information technology "Sirius" is located in the Imeretinskaya Lowland, between the Mzymta and Psou rivers, although it was originally located in the Adler district of Sochi, Krasnodar Territory. Contrary to the widespread myth that Sirius is a closed and inaccessible territory, in fact, 800 schoolchildren aged 10 to 17 who have achieved special success in science, mathematics, chemistry, sports or art come here every month from all regions of Russia. It is impossible to get to Sirius by a voucher; the only way to participate in an educational shift is to pass a competition, which includes several stages. The number of places in these shifts is strictly limited. Detailed information on the selection criteria and other useful materials are available on the Sirius website.
In order to support talented youth, the Center invites schoolchildren from all over the country to participate in such programs as: Art, Sports, Music, Fine Arts, Literary Creativity, Science, giving everyone the opportunity to express themselves. On the territory of Sirius there are two kindergartens, a presidential lyceum, a college, a scientific and technological university. The initial idea has grown, and now Sirius is implementing a unique university model, offering students training in conditions similar to those in the world's most modern universities: stylish dormitories, fashionable public spaces, laboratories and green parks. To create a rigorous theoretical base, the university has five research centers that have the following areas:
- Mathematical modeling in biomedicine and geophysics
- Financial mathematics and financial technologies
- Mathematical robotics and artificial intelligence
- Translational medicine
- Laboratory complex
The founder of the university was also the educational foundation "Talent and Success". During their studies, schoolchildren live on campus: in fact, it is a four-star hotel with classrooms. For schoolchildren interested in exact and natural sciences, the Center offers educational programs in mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry and biology. Even those who do not have significant achievements can participate in them. These children first take free distance courses 3-4 months before the start of the program, and then take tests. The best participants are invited to the final selection stage, which is held throughout Russia.
Sirius has its own budget, which is formed from tax revenues and is separate from the budget of the Krasnodar Territory; all expenses for the maintenance of the Olympic infrastructure are now also borne by Sirius. Recently, the official magazine of the federal territory, Sirius, began to be published, which consists of electronic and printed versions. In the paper edition, which is published quarterly and distributed throughout Russia, you can find articles on science, technology, art and sports. The daily updated portal will be of interest to everyone who wants to learn the news and develop together with Sirius
Excursion events are regularly organized for children, because there really is something to see here. Popular places include the Southern Cultures Park, excavations of a Byzantine temple, a planetarium and a model of the Buran spacecraft, the Olympic Park with a singing fountain, which has a special program of musical accompaniment from different styles, including classical music, every day of the week. You can also go on an excursion to the center of Sochi or visit the picturesque Krasnaya Polyana.
